Students perform introductory translation assignments from Spanish to English and vice versa. They develop an understanding of translation theory through reading and class discussion and come to understand communicative translation and compare it to a direct, word-for-word approach. Problematic grammatical, discursive, and pragmatic issues are analyzed and the grammar of Spanish is reviewed in detail. (Prereq: SPAN 202)
Course narrative: This class was my first experience in studying the art of translation. Before taking this class, I didn't realize how difficult translation was. One thing I enjoyed learning about was the translation of jokes and songs. When translating, you can't just translate word for word and that is especially true in the case of jokes. It can be rather difficult to translate jokes and still have them be funny after the translation. This class fulfilled MLOs 1 and 2.
