Nature of Language & Language Acquisition introduces the scientific study of language, which includes theoretical concepts (e.g. structural linguistics, sociolinguistics, language development in first and second language acquisition) and application of linguistics in reading and writing development. Students develop a knowledge base in linguistics, phonemic awareness, and syntax, and apply it in real-world educational settings. (May be offered as classroom-based, hybrid or online.) (Prereq: GE Area A1 and A2 and A3)
Course narrative: Before taking this class, I didn't know anything about linguistics. This class taught me the basics with a focus on language acquisition. I was glad to have the opportunity to take this class as it helped me in my own language acquisition. At the end of the class, we needed to analyze the speech of a someone who learned English as a second language and I chose Jackie Chan. You can read my paper analyzing his speech here. We also had a take home final that covered a wide variety of linguistic topics which you can see here. This class fulfilled the MLO 2 requirement.
