Welcome!
My name is Sarah Nelson. This is my e-portfolio for CSUMB where I am majoring in Spanish Language and Hispanic Culture.
Personal StatementMy Forays into SpanishWhen I first started taking Spanish classes, it was to fulfill a graduation requirement. In order to graduate from high school, all students were required to take two years of a foreign language and in my high school, Spanish was the only language offered. However, as I took those classes and learned more about other cultures, I started to realize that I was fascinated by those cultures. The beauty found in the art, dance, and music captivated me and I knew I needed to know more. I grew determined to become fluent. I wanted to communicate with people from different backgrounds and life experiences. Living in the Bay Area, I encountered many Spanish-speaking people and I always felt a thrill of exhilaration when I could have a conversation with them in Spanish.
California State University of Monterey Bay has allowed me to learn more about my future. Ever since that first Spanish class, I knew I wanted to do something that involved language. However, until taking the Major ProSeminar class, I didn’t know what I could do. Now, I know that I would like to teach for a few years and then work as a translator and interpreter. My dream is to teach English in Spain for a few years then act as a translator and interpreter in Mexico. I don’t think I will ever lose that spark of excitement I feel when I realize that I can communicate with someone else in another language. Growing up, I always loved learning about other places and people that were different from me. Even though I couldn’t understand the words, I loved to listen to music in other languages. I am so grateful that I now have the opportunity to learn about and understand other cultures and facilitate communication between people. |
