I grew up in an English speaking household in San Jose, California. When I came to CSUMB, I did not know what I wanted to do with my life. I knew I loved learning about other cultures and that I had a love of traveling. Because I had taken other Spanish courses in high school and at the community college I attended, I already knew some Spanish and decided that I wanted to continue learning about the people and cultures of the Spanish speaking world. When I started taking classes at CSUMB, I thought that I would like to be a translator and interpreter. However, after going to Spain and taking some classes, I think that I would prefer teaching to translating and interpreting. I would love to go back to Spain and teach English for a few years before coming back to the States and teaching Spanish. After taking the classes I have, I am incredibly proud of my progress in interpersonal communication. I am now able to converse with people in Spanish and I never thought that I would get this far when I first started learning the language. However, I know that I still have a long way to go before I would call myself fluent in the language. I hope to continue developing this area of the language even after I finish my schooling and get my Bachelor degree. I hope to also continue my literary and cultural knowledge by traveling to Spanish speaking countries and learning more about the culture and people. I would love to visit Spain again and also travel to Mexico and Ecuador in order to understand the differences that can occur in one common language. I would love to teach English in multiple countries and better improve my own understanding of both English and Spanish. I hope to also internalize the language and immerse myself in the culture enough that I would call myself fluent in the language and be able to hold long and in depth conversations with someone in Spanish in the same way that I do in English. Even after finishing my classes, I can still improve and get better. My interpersonal skills can be improved simply by talking to people and I would love to learn more about the various cultures of different Spanish speaking people. The classes I have taken at CSUMB and the project that I have completed have greatly improved my research and technological skills and I hope to use those skills in the future. CSUMB has opened up many doors for me with the Spanish Language and Hispanic Cultures major and I am glad that I found something that I am passionate in. I hope that I will be able to teach both English and Spanish for a few years before possibly going to graduate school. Although teaching is my goal for now, I think it would be helpful to have a more thorough understanding of the language, which I could get if I go to graduate school.
